I used to be the kind of person who just doesn't sweat because my endocrine system was very out of whack from the steroids I was prescribed. Since healing my system is opening up and I am sweating regularly now which is great. Staying on a mostly raw vegan diet will not make my sweat smell but if I eat any food like dairy, meat and lots of cooked food then I notice I stink when I sweat lol
So I try to keep my diet as clean as possible and most of the time I dont' stink lol but I can still sweat a bit especially walking up hills when I take my children to and from school on summer days. So keeping DRY is important for me.
I have been experimenting with making my own deodorant and there are many recipes out there but I found this one works for me the best with these powders in particular. I have tried baking soda ones and just oil based ones it was very irritating for me.
Some info on the powders:
Tapicoa Powder - Tapicoa powder helps to thicken the balm and also assist in drawing out toxins from the sweat glands.
Kaolin Clay (you can also try bentonite clay which will have a stronger effect and darken the colour of the balm) - Kaolin clay absorbs odors and toxins from the skin by creating a leaching effect around the under arm lymph nodes/sweat glands. It also extracts heavy metals from the skin and provides a calming and soothing to the skin.
Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) - DE is mainly silica and a crucial trace element which our bodies could benefit from. By adding DE it is more soothing compared to adding baking soda to draw out toxins and moisture. It eases sensitive skin.
The combo of these powders and your favourite oils is a win win :)
MAKE YOUR OWN!
Those of you who want to start making your own skin care products, click this link to see the steps I use to making lotions, creams, and butters: Lotion or Cream Making Process
Recipe follows:
This is a oil-based balm with powders so no liquid phase and no need to add preservative. The vitamin-E will keep the oils from going rancid over time. Very easy to make You can add the contents in a jar or a tube. The consistency turns out like a dry glidable balm.
Step 1: Melt oils
40% hemp oil*
24% coconut oil*
20% beeswax* If you want it to glide more you can reduce the beeswax amount by 1-2%.
16% shea butter*
1% vit e
Step 2: Mix in powders (be careful not to inhale anything in!)
21% tapicoa powder (food grade)
13% diatomaceous earth
6% kaolin clay
Step 3: Cool down slighly and add essential oil(s)
1-1.5% essential oil* (depending how strongly scented you want it to be)
For itchy skin or hot summer days you may like to add peppermint essential oil to give it a cooling sensation upon application. Chamomile and lavender essential oils is very soothing too. Some like to add tea tree oil for its antibacterial properties.
*organic ingredients
NOTE: You can replace any raw ingredient in the recipe with your favourite oil. The final product outcome will vary a little depending on what type/brand of raw ingredient you use e.g., wildcraft shea butter vs refined shea butter
