Zinc Oxide Balm aka Nappy Rash Balm
This is basically a balm with zinc oxide in it. The zinc oxide acts as a water repellent and keeps the skin protected and moisturised at the same time.
When I had inflamed, angry, oozing weepy, red skin the best thing was to keep the skin AS DRY AS possible. Staying in the sun is great to heal those weepy areas. I know at times this will hurt so much that you NEED to apply some barrier on to just to MOVE without pain lol.
This is where a natural balm can be useful instead of using other chemically-made emollients for protection.
Zinc oxide repels the water and keeps it away from your skin. This is exactly what it does on in most nappy rash creams out there with zinc oxide. The baby's bottom has a layer of zinc oxide and oily emollient on it so a wet diaper won't cause a nappy rash. The zinc oxide repels the wetness and moisture.
Inflamed, angry, oozing weepy, red skin is basically ACIDS coming out the THIRD KIDNEY - OUR SKIN because our two kidneys are not filtering these acids out. Read more about how our body produces symptoms here: http://byebyesteroids.blogspot.co.nz/2015/08/understanding-our-lymphatic-system.html
MAKE YOUR OWN!
Those of you who want to start making your own skin care products, click this link to see the steps I use to making lotions, creams, and butters: Lotion or Cream Making Process
Recipe follows:
This is a oil-based balm so no liquid phase and no need to add preservative. Very easy to make
OIL PHASE 100%
40% Coconut oil*
20% Shea butter*
20% Calendula oil*
10% Hemp oil*
10% Beeswax*
Stir zinc oxide in melted oils (be careful not to inhale anything in!)
25% Zinc Oxide ^ oil soluble powder
You can reduce/increase the amount zinc oxide if you like, generally nappy balms use anywhere between 5 - 40% of zinc oxide. So just play around with the amounts and see what works best for your skin.
LAST PHASE
0.5% - 2.0% your favourite essential oil(s)
*organic
For itchy skin I like to add peppermint essential oil to give it a cooling sensation upon application to soothe the itch. Chamomile and lavender essential oils is very soothing too, great for baby's bottom Lemongrass is also great. Sandalwood, frankincense myrth is also good... the list can go on
Adapted from original recipe: http://www.gonative.co.nz/Recipes/Baby+care/Lavender++chamomile+nappy+balm.html
NOTE: You can replace any raw ingredient in the recipe with your favourite oil. The final product outcome will vary a little depending on what type/brand of raw ingredient you use e.g., wildcraft shea butter vs refined shea butter
